Old Engish and Old German Names

Boehler, Maria. Die altenglischen Frauenamen. Nendlem, Liechtenstine: Krauss Reprint, 1967.

An excellent book on Anglo-Saxon women's names in German. Useful for completist only. (JA)

Feilitzen, Olof von. The Pre-Conquest Personal Names of Domesday Book. Uppsala: Private Printing, 1937.

By definition any name in the book is in our period. Well done, with many alternative spellings. Recommended. (JA)

Morlet, Marie-Therese. Les Noms de Personne sur le Territoire de L'Ancienne Gaule du VI au XII Siecle. Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique: Paris, 1972.

This book is in three volumes. The first contains names from Germanic sources, the second names from Latin sources, and the third from both German and Latin sources. All of the books are in French. They are complete with dates, derivations, and much commentary. Very, very useful if you read French, useful even if you don't. Highly recommended. (JA)

Searle, William George, Onamasticon Anglo-Saxonicum, Cambridge University Press.

Difficult to find, but a monumental volume. It is a compilation of Anglo-Saxon given names found in charters and other legal documents, histories, and so on. It is, in fact, documentation waiting to be used. It must be carefully used: Searle accepted many names on very slim evidence. However, where possible, he cites actual people bearing the name. In these cases, the documentation is unshakable. (AN)

Strom, Hilmer. Old English Names in Bede's History. Williams & Norgate, Ltd: London, 1939.

A good book on old English names with plenty of dates. Very useful for someone who wants to understand the naming practices of the time. Recommended. (JA)

Tengvik, G. Old English Bynames. Uppsala, 1938.

An excellent book on Old English bynames, with dates and variant forms. Recommended. (JA)

Woolf, Henry Bosley. The Old Germanic Principles of Name-Giving. The John Hopkins Press: Baltimore, 1939.

This book is a study of names and naming practices among the Old Germanic tribes. It is more detailed and technical than most people will need. It does however have dates, and if your local library has it, it is worth using. However, it is not a book on German names. Rather it deals with Anglo-Saxon names. Recommended if none of the better books on Anglo-Saxon names are available. (JA)
