Introduction

These bynames are taken from two Glagolitic registers of deaths from the island of Silba, spanning 1613-1650, now kept in the National Archives, in Zadar. Silba lies in the Adriatic sea, and is a part of the region of Dalmatia. The source had already transliterated these names into Latin script, with the following notes:

Otherwise, the transliteration system appears to be using the International Scholarly System (see the University of Arizona Library for more information about this system).

According to Vigato (2005; 192-3), the vast majority of bynames, ending in -ić, -ov, -ev, -in, -inić, -ević, and -ović, are masculine patronymics or metronymics. While -ka, and possibly -ica, is used with feminine bynames, derived from the personal name or nickname of her father or husband. Finally, there are bynames that do not seem to have had any patronymic suffixes at all, such as Kovač (blacksmith), or Sokol (falcon).

Please note, my knowledge of Croatian is very limited, there is a good chance I may have misunderstood parts of the article.
