Prizes of the London Masters of Defense

Here are the London Masters of Defense, with their Provosts and Free Scholars, their prizes, who they played them with, where they were played and what weapons forms were used. The information below was taken from the Sloane MSS. 2350 (of course). There is some analysis by Herbert Berry, who transcribed the Sloane MSS. 2350, and some by myself. I have tried to preserve the original spellings of the names as they appeared in the manuscript. If you find any errors, you've been staring at this too long. E-mail me the corrections and we'll talk about your addiction.

Special thanks goes to Don Danulf for showing me HTML tricks I never paid attention to previously.

  • MS says that Dewell 'playd A challeng agaynst all Provosts and free scholars' - this may not have been a prize
  • 'not admitted at that tyme for his disorder, But he was alowed by the goodwills of Masters...10 August 1582'
  • Valentyne Longe called a FS here, this challenge may have been a day or 2 before his challenge?
  • Dewell was _allowed_ in 2 days after Longe, this is a decent assumption
